BTEC Introductory Certificate and Diploma in Applied Science

This qualification has been submitted to QCA for accreditation for first teaching in September 2006.   For Pre-16 learners  who are studying for the BTEC Level 1 Certificate or Diploma must complete vocational units 7, 8 and 9 labelled **, which incorporate the Key Stage 4 programme of study.

Overview
This  Edexcel Level  1 qualifications in Applied Science are designed to widen participation and provide flexibility to enhance learner attainment at Level 1 on the  National Qualification Framework.  The qualifications are available Pre and Post 16 and will be funded on sections 96 and 97. In terms of reporting will be listed on the DFES Achievement and Performance Tables.

BTEC Introductory Certificate in Applied Science
A nested component of the Introductory  Diploma in Applied Science and equivalent to two GCSEs grade D –G.

BTEC Introductory Diploma in Applied Science
This qualification is equivalent to four GCSEs grade D to G.

Progression
Students may progress for the Key Stage 3 Programme of Study for Science or from an Entry Level Certificate in Science.

On successful completion of the BTEC Introductory Certificate in Applied Science students can top-up to the BTEC introductory Diploma in Applied Science by undertaking the additional units. Students can progress to Edexcel Level 2 First qualifications in Applied Science or may have other optional pathways.
